Process wastewater is generated at the facility from washing and packaging fruits and vegetables for home delivery.  This makes the wastewater high in dissolved biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).  To remove dissolved BOD, CWS conducted a design/build of a moving bed bioreactor (MBBR) pretreatment system with secondary dissolved air flotation (DAF) for the removal of sloughed biomass.

• Utilize much of the existing equipment
• No additional area to expand system
• Replace tanks and equipment that were past their useful life
• Work within the terraced space of the existing system
• Replace existing Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) biological system to new DAF/ Bioreactor system
• Demolish damaged EQ Tank tower (located in the center of the system)
• Effluent to go back through existing monitoring station

The pretreatment system is comprised of the following major components:

• New EQ Tank with rotary screen
• New Reactor and Floc tanks for existing primary DAF
• New Bioreactor with aeration
• Secondary DAF in new building located in employee parking lot
• Sludge dewatering system with volute press

With the components of the wastewater pretreatment system being on different terraced levels, design of the system upgrades was a challenge.  Tanks are on different levels; buildings are on different levels; primary and secondary DAFs are in different buildings.  A true jigsaw puzzle!
